Console Design

Like most engineers, as I kid I loved two things: Videogames and building things. My first introduction to methods of design and prototyping was through disassembling and modifying video game consoles.

Many of these projects took the form of taking a system designed for at home use and redesigning for portable use. I had to solve many problems through this process like power regulation, video display, user input, enclosure design, heat management, batterypack/charging design, cable management, and cost. One major common tasks was size reduction of the motherboard, where I had to follow technical drawings online to cut off unnecessary components from the console. This process was able to bring the motherboard of a Nintendo Wii down to the size of a smartphone.
